Cycleways and streetscapes
Downer New Zealand has a track record of delivering high quality, thoughtfully designed, and cost-effective cycleways and streetscapes for our local government partners and communities.
We offer complete cycleway and footpath design and construction services, along with full road surface treatment capabilities to meet the needs and expectations of our customers.
Cycleways
Making the cycling experience safer and more accessible for all ages has led to the development and need for new cycleways across our country.
Our experience, size and expertise allow us to offer a full suite of services to our clients, from feasibility studies and design, right through to providing access to remote regions of New Zealand, and building and maintaining cycleway and roading infrastructure. We carry out complete Greenfield and Brownfield developments, and often work adjacent to New Zealand’s beautiful waterways.
Streetscapes
We work closely with our partners to balance cost and time against disruption, and deliver high quality streetscape works to help create vibrant and exciting destinations, that reflect the needs of our stakeholders, and provide better spaces for our communities to enjoy.
Design and design management
Our expert engineering input provides technical support for the development of works methodology and specifications. The design management will encompass all ongoing processes, business decisions, and strategies that enable innovation and create effectively designed cycleways and footpaths.
Early contractor involvement
The advantages of this service are that the client and design team get to have full access to Downer construction teams at an early stage in development. This early engagement allows us to add significant value / cost savings to projects. We have been engaged on numerous ECI type contracts where our early involvement has allowed for cost and time savings to be achieved.
By working closely with the delivery team during construction, we can deliver the full benefits of ECI and robust cost plans.
Supply of quality bituminous products
Road Science is New Zealand’s leading designer and supplier of bitumen and bitumen-based products.
Through our four bitumen plants, Road Science distributes approximately 40% of New Zealand’s bitumen. Bitumen is predominately supplied via the New Zealand Refining Company from Marsden Point, but Road Science also imports bitumen to ensure continuity of supply for the NZ industry.
The Road Science specialist bitumen product manufacturing plants produce high quality polymer modified binders to enhance the properties of bitumen and improve performance in specialist surfacing applications. Road Science is also a leader in bitumen emulsion technology. We manufacture advanced bitumen emulsions for chip seals which significantly improve safety, have a reduced carbon footprint and are technically superior to other chip sealing binders.
Our four Road Science laboratories are among Australasia’s best equipped pavements, materials and bitumen laboratories. While ensuring Road Science products meet specifications though quality control testing, the laboratories also carry out significant materials testing and product design for our customers. Our dedicated full time Research and Development team carry out projects in search of improved products and services and carry out customer funded specific research.
Providing technical solutions with value engineering
Our deep experience means that we can provide significant value engineering to deliver innovative solutions to the most technical challenges. During our works on the Downtown Infrastructure Development Programme (DIDP), a key challenge was access and sequencing with significant interface requirements between the various parts of the project (Te Wānanga, seawall strengthening, and streetscape work), involving detailed planning, staging and sequencing analysis. Piling could only start once we had safely demolished the heritage wharf structures. This work was coordinated with streetscape works for shared access and other marine works, including installation of the new pontoons to enable cruise ships to dock elsewhere. The result was a project that was highly integrated and provided Auckland Transport with the synergies and benefits of a programme approach.
Engaging with stakeholders in complex environments
Our team have extensive stakeholder management experience and understand the importance of engaging with stakeholders and community groups to achieve buy-in to create a ‘one team, one vision’ culture. By involving all parties in the process, we work hard to build trust and address challenges, allowing us to alleviate concerns by minimising and mitigating impacts. The Memorial Park Alliance showcases our experience in the delivery of public infrastructure to a highly publicised immovable end date. We worked closely with all parties and delivered the works five weeks early, working collaboratively to improve staffing and keep traffic flowing. The key to the success of this project was primarily based on uncompromising and highly quality stakeholder and relationship management.
Leaders in safety
Our Zero Harm Safety Model is recognised industry-wide for its effectiveness in creating a safe work environment. Our health and safety statistics are industry leading.
