Our AE Smith team is playing a key role in the Department of Corrections’ project to develop a new prison with a dedicated mental health and addiction service at Waikeria Prison, in the Waikato region of New Zealand’s North Island.
Project Manager, Steve Minnaar, said: “AE Smith is providing a one-stop shop for our client, CPB contractors, to deliver plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire, structural and civil, across the prison’s 1200-hectare site.”
Since AE Smith started working on the Waikeria Prison project in May 2020, the team has more than doubled their original contract value by securing diverse work packages and tripled the amount of team members on site from 20 to 60 people. The team collaborates with more than 50 other subcontractors on site to deliver the best outcomes for the client.
Steve said: “We undertake everything from our original contract works of installing inground pipework for plumbing and mechanical, through to a range of variation works across the site and each of its 30 buildings. This includes electrical works, such as installing the low voltage direct cable, fibre infrastructure, electric vehicle charging and the high voltage system, through to large excavation packages and even the construction of the sites main tank farm plant room.”
The new facility is scheduled to be delivered in August 2022. A period of commissioning will occur before new prison units are brought into operation in 2023.
