Our People (USL)
Nationwide specialist underground service locators providing comprehensive location and mapping services including 24/7 emergency services throughout New Zealand.
We have the largest number of beforeUdig certified locators in the country, a nationally recognised certification for locators who have demonstrated a high level of understanding and practical expertise that meet industry requirements.
Certified locators are assessed by industry experts in the correct use of equipment and locating techniques and knowledge. Additionally, some network operators require permission to access their assets and this certification provides us with that authorisation.
Underground Service Locators is also accredited by Nulca New Zealand, an industry association representing underground service locators and those involved in locating and protecting New Zealand’s underground infrastructure. Their mission is to build a utility locating industry that sets a global benchmark for capability, best practice, and innovation.
Meet some of our team members below:
Shayne Goodwin,
Operations Supervisor
Shayne oversees the day-to-day running of all Underground Service Locator teams across New Zealand, including everything from small one-off scheduled/reactive works to larger projects involving multiple Downer business groups and contractors both offshore and locally. Shayne has more than 20 years’ experience in the utility industry working in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. He has spent the last ten years at Downer and what he likes most about his role is problem solving and finding the best outcomes and solutions for clients. Along with his extensive project management experience, Shayne has exceptional GPR-specific interpretation, EMI scanner knowledge, along with strong concrete scanning and utility mapping capabilities.
Matthew Craig,
Utilities Locator
Matthew is a certified beforeUdig Utilities Locator and he is also involved in capturing and processing GIS information that allows the team to create CAD drawings / maps and plans of the utilities they mark out on sites. Matthew started his career at Downer in 2019 and he has done several courses with Downer to help him build his knowledge and skills, including GIS technology training, First Aid and Traffic Management. What he enjoys most about his job is working outdoors and the places his work takes him to. No two days are quite the same and Matthew has been lucky enough to work overseas in Tuvalu. Outside of work, Matt enjoys fishing, scuba diving especially for crayfish, camping, hunting and spending time with his son.
