Health, safety and wellbeing is the way we conduct our business. It is also the way we behave and engage with our people, partners, and stakeholders.
Going beyond compliance: Our approach has been built on participation, leadership and accountability for all our people. Zero Harm is a proactive process throughout the business helping to ensure our people go home safely at the end of every shift. We focus on a holistic approach to support the mental health and wellbeing of our people and actively encourage our people to own the difference they contribute to the team. Diversity of thought helps to shape a robust Zero Harm programme.
People driven improvement: We are using learning teams to understand incidents to engage with all parties involved. This ensures robust learnings.
Cross business learning: We encourage various parts of the businesses to run learning teams together, so they benefit from each other’s experiences and collectively improve their approach to prevent health and safety risks.
Stand in the gap programme: Launched in 2014, this award-winning programme is a collaborative approach from leaders to empower their people with a voice for safety which they are comfortable to use. Stand in the Gap was adopted to change the hearts and minds of their people. Behavioural change is not a one stop fix, it needs continuous reinforcement to keep awareness front and centre.
Stand in the Gap is a simple message that helps to raise awareness to every one of the risks our people are facing. It also gives them a vehicle to act upon any concerns. Stand in the Gap means a respected environment where safety and mental wellbeing are a priority and supported by colleagues and managers, where everyone feels included.
Downer engaged the entire workforce with the Stand in the Gap message and used it as the foundation for a change in safety culture within the business. The move away from safety being policed, to safety being owned by the operational teams as just part of what we do. This programme keeps evolving and a refreshed version will be launched in January 2022.
